Nights in Rodanthe is a film, that takes place in Outer Banks, starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. Two strangers meet at an inn, each planning to deal with troubling circumstances in their lives. Sparks fly and a relationship begins that may open up new possibilities for both.
Adrienne Willis, a woman with her life in chaos, retreats to the tiny coastal town of Rodanthe, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, to tend to a friend’s inn for the weekend. Here she hopes to find the tranquility she so desperately needs to rethink the conflicts surrounding her — a wayward husband who has asked to come home, and a teen-aged daughter who resents her every decision.
Called the Inn at Rodanthe, the property has always been a vacation rental home. It was moved away from the edge of the surf and no longer has the dramatic (and dangerous) proximity to the ocean, but it still affords a romantic view of the sea. Decked out in its star-turn trim, the six-bedroom house is available for rent, but even if you stay elsewhere, you’ll want to snap a picture. It was filmed in the small seaside village of Rodanthe, the northernmost village of the inhabited areas of Hatteras Island as well as North Topsail Beach, North Carolina.

An interesting story about the filming here:
Although a nor’easter played a major role in Nights in Rodanthe, filmmakers were not happy when a real-life storm, which eventually became Subtropical Storm Andrea, blew in while filming was about to get underway and did minor damage to the Inn. The crew almost gave up and went somewhere else, but decided to wait it out. Ironically, though, the fierce rain that pounded the Inn in the movie came from a fire hose.
The house was damaged in a hurricane after the movie was filmed. New owners bought the house and relocated it to another part of the Outer Banks. Tourists to the area can rent portions of the house and stay in specific rooms that have been remodeled to appear as they did in the film (actual interior scenes were filmed on sound stages). The name of the house is Serendipity.
