Subject: Sound Advice

What can anyone tell me about boating on the Sound side. My father-in-law can't vacation without his 19'boat. We're thinking of renting up in Monteray shore area and getting a house on the sound front. Might be silly question but, in general is water deep enough to pull up to docks? Is the Sound generally open enough for water skiing? How the fishing during summer months?
Any info would help. Thanks

if there is a dock you would have a channel leading in you need to follow the channels until in deeper water fishing can be good in that area is considered fresh water so you will need a fresh water license and then if you fish in the Ocean too you will need another license also if you travel below the Wright memorial bridge on the sound that is considered salt water

A number of the docks in Monteray Shores are more for atmosphere than for boating. Don't count on there being a channel out to deeper water. There is a public ramp at the Whalehead Club where he can launch and recover every day. Currituck Sound is not very deep--maybe some 6-7 foot holes, but more like 4 or 5 feet. I live about 8 miles south of Monteray and lots of days boats like your dad's cant get in or out.

I would suggest renting a house in Southern Shores and contacting the Southern Shores Civic Association Marina. They usually have a slip for rent - $100 per week. You can water ski, tube and get around very well from there.
