Just spent 2 weeks in Corolla, and was so disappointed by the amount of trash left on the beach at Whalehead, and the number of people blocking the road on the northern beaches (4-wheel drive area) with vehicles, chairs, umbrellas, or ball games! Have never seen it that bad in our 15 years of visiting. I'm sure many were first timers and didn't know better. Just a reminder to learn the rules of the road - pick up a brochure. Thanks! Subject: Surf and riptides?
We are considering a month in the OB this summer. But, hear that the surf/rip tides can be quite dangerous for little kids on the OB beaches. Is this the case? Read More...

We are staying in Currituck so will have to drive to the beach anyway... suggestions for the best soft sandy beaches along the OBX? Does anyone know how long it takes to get from Corolla to Roanoke (the aquarium)? Any coupons, etc avail for the aquarium? Best rental companies for everything from baby equip to kayaks to binoculars? Also, does anyone rent golf carts? Read More...

I’m planning a 1st time family vacation to the Frisco area. We are planning on staying at a cottage on the sound front. Does anyone know if there are any nice public ocean side beaches easily accessible (parking, good beaches)? Are the sound side beaches better for small children (smaller waves)? Thanks for your help… Read More...

Subject: 4x4 Beach driving & sitting
Just where is one to sit in the 4x4 area? I'm confused! We, like most people, like to sit at waters edge, but 'they' say you are to drive at waters edge. I also see people driving back farther, closer to the dunes-in other truck tracks. So where is the 'right' place to sit? I worry sometimes we will blend in with the beach because of the sun glare and get run over! Dont get me wrong, i wont vacation anywhere else but the 4x4 area-so dont suggest i go to another area! LOL---just tell me where to sit :) Read More...

Subject: Sound vs. Ocean?
Hey all, does anyone know what the difference between sound side vs. ocean side is? Can one actually swim in the sound side, and would it be better for those with children since there are less waves, or is it mainly boat docks? Read More...

Subject: Soundside vs Oceanside
Hi all! Our family is looking into houses in the OB for next summer. Mainly Northern areas, such as Corolla, Duck, Nags Head and perhaps Southern Shores. We have children ages 2 1/2-5 and would like opinions on the beaches in those areas. If you stay soundside, are there 'beach' areas just like what you would get on the oceanside, but calmer waters? And if you stay 'between the highways' does it generally mean you have to get in the car to go to the beach or is walking still an option? Any information and tips would be much appreciated!
