Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills Those towns are rightin the center of everything.
Southern Shores and Duck will be at one end (northern) or Nags Head will be at the southern end. Stay in the middle for your first trip. enjoy

Give us an idea of ages, interests and what you hope to do and see.
We've got more than 80 mles of beach down here, and we love to share our suggestions.
You'll see some good ideas, make your choices, and have the best vacation ever.
I like Duck and Corolla, but that's just me.

My kids are 21, 11, and 14. It is my 25th wedding anniversary. We like to grill out, just have fun. Going somewhere new would be so nice. We just love hanging out.

Whalehead Beach in Corolla. Great beach, lots to do, nearby shopping and dining. Lighthouse, Wildlife Education Center, 4WD area, kayak rental, jet skis, eco tours, wild horse tours, go carts and much more.
Check realtor website at this site under where to stay at the top of this page.
When are you coming?

The outer banks have mostly beach houses, a few hotel/motels, but mostly houses. The main stretch of road is measured by milepost numbers. Starting at 1 in Kill Devil HIlls and upward as you travel the stretch of highway all the way to Cape Hatteras. Staying anywhere between milepost 1 and 23 (south nags head) will put you near all of the stores, restaraunts and most of the attractions. Once you reach the Hatteras National Seashore area, the entertainment and dining amenities are fewer and far between. Our favorite area is in South Nags Head. It's close enough to things yet peaceful and quiet on the beach. Favorite attractions are Jockey's Ridge (climb the dunes at sunset), Manteo Waterfront, N.C. Aquarium, the outdoor drama "Lost Colony", a day trip to Ocracoke Island and checking out all the lighthouses. Good places to eat are the SugarShack for great take-out seafood, Black Pelican and Hurricane Mo's at Pirates Cove. Oh, be sure to check out the fishermen's catches at the Oregon Inlet Marina at about 4pm each afternoon. Have a great time! You can't beat the outerbanks for beauty and value.

Anywhere in the Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head area should duit your just fine. This will provide you easy access to restaurants and groceries, as well as, lots of things for the kids. Plenty of surf shops, souvenir shops etc. Make sure you take them to Kitty Hawk kites.

I really appreciate all the help. When you are going somewhere new, spending money, etc its nice to get tips. Now, to find the "perfect place". We want a house with a pool, and we will walk to the beach. That is a luxury for us, have a house with a pool. Keep the suggestions coming!!!!

Here is a some more info on the Corolla area. Lighthouse Drive runs parallel to Whalehead Beach. Nice location but there are several other 'communities' in the Corolla area as well...Ocean Sands, Ocean Hill, Villages at Ocean Hill plus some others. Anyway, Corolla is a nice community. Grocery shopping is convenient in Corolla (Food Lion and Harris Teeter) and there are a number of shops and restaraunts located in Tim Buck II Shopping Village just across form the Food Lion complex. Go to the top of the page. Type in 'Tim Buck II' in the search window. Try both 'web' and 'site'. Should find good info regarding the shops, etc. Just a little north of the Food Lion complex (shops and restaurants as well in that complex)is the Corolla Light Village Shops. More shopping and restaurants. You can watch the sunrise on the beach in the morning and the sunsets over the sound in the evening. The Corolla Lighthouse, the Whalehead Club, the Wildlife Education Center(history of the Sound) are very nice. If you think you would enjoy a kayak tour of the Sound sign up early at the Wildlife Education Center. Check out NC Bar-b-que just north of the Corolla lighthouse. Rent a Jeep and drive the 4x4 beach. Maybe see some horses. Or book a spot for a paid tour of the four wheel drive area. Don't know what you are into but you can rent jet skis, go parasailing, boogie boarding, fishing, crabbing, volley ball on the beach, bike riding, etc. We like the Dockside Seafood Market in the Food Lion complex for fresh sea food. Below is the Corolla Village website. Provides a brief history, list of restaurants, shops, etc. Duck is south of Corolla...nice village with more nice shops/restaurants. But Corolla has my vote. And if you want to see other area attractions Have fun.
You can drive south to the other lighthouses, Jockey Ridge, Wright Bros Memorial, etc. Hatteras is approximately 70 miles or so south of Corolla. From Hatteras you can take the ferry to Okracoke Island. Nice day trip. At the top and bottom of this page you will find "WHAT TO DO", "PLAN YOUR TRIP", "EVENT CALENDAR", "MAPS". Helpful info. Here is the Corolla website.

I agree with earlier poster try and stay between Kil Devil Hills and Nags Head, close to everything. View the houses on the rental sites, but understand they may look exactly as posted. Once you decide on one check back here and chances are someone can give more info. Regardless you will be back for more trips.

We enjoy being in Kill Devil Hills we are pretty much in the middle of everything. If we cannot do KDH we go for Nags Head it's nice for us to be close to restaurants and activities for the children.

We've rented through Stan White for 15 years. Never had the same house twice and never had a "bad" house!

don't be so lazy! Google this stuff for yourself. Asking for suggestions on things to do is fine.

We stay in Nags Head and have never used anyone but Kitty Dunes Rentals so I can only vouch for them. Never had any problems at all with them.

I have used several rental companies over the past twenty years that we have been coming to the outer banks. You want to stay away from Sun Realty and Sesside Vacations. Those two were the worst experiences we have had in the twenty years. I have had good luck with Carolina Designs and Surf and Sound if you want to go to hatteras area. Twiddy is off the hook if you want the Corolla area. Just keep in mind that the traffic on check in day going to Corolla is slow, but the area is nice once you get there. Hatteras is different. We enjoy all areas and each town is so close to the next that no matter where you stay you can easily access the next. You can also try renting directly from an owner. We did that last year and had a good experience. We haven't booked for this year yet. But might go back to the owner and do that again. That seems to be the most cost effective way to stay with the economy being what it is. Take care and enjoy your vacation.

If yo decide on the 'northern beaches' Twiddy and Brindley Beach Vacations have provided excellent service over the years. They may have houses in the Kitty Hawk and Nags Head area but I'm not sure. And...your inquiry is not as that of a 'lazy' individual as a couple of posters have expressed. Coming to the Outer Banks for the first time can be a little daunting. Lots of choices and the houses can be expensive. You are doing the right thing...ask a few questions do a little research and you'll arrive at the right decision. Hope this helps. And enjoy the Outer Banks. Great place.

We have gone through Nags Head Realty the nine years we've been going to the OBX and have never had a problem. Their site has the houses/preferences online, along wtih virtual tours... www.nagsheadrealty.com

We have stayed in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head... Great location!
