Subject: Dirty Jobs (without the drama)....
To continue the fun post. What are dog sharks? Seriously, I'd like to know without the extra commentary.

Thanks for continuing the thread. It seems there has to be something for Mike to do.

To the best of my knowledge, they are little sharks, nothing more nothing less. We catch them all the time deep dropping offshore, and I think the bad reputation comes into play because they are always biting even though you're trying to catch something else. I don't think they would be any more nasty than cleaning any other fish.

First, without getting real technical, Dogfish are small, toothless sharks. They can grow up to 25 lbs and generally prefer colder water. There are two kinds of Dogfish in this area, the Smooth(Gray) and Spiny. They have a significant commercial value, with Spiny being highly desirable The Commercial fishery has had many quotas and restrictions placed on it. A lot of our catch is exported. In Great Britain they are used for "Fish and Chips". As far as "Dirty" goes, any shark that is for food consumption has to be cleaned ASAP. All Sharks develop an Amonia smell if their flesh is not cared for properly. They also have significant sized internal organs especially Liver. Not the cleanest job.

Captain,

With all of your knowledge, you have got to know of SOMETHING Mike can do in the OBX that is disgustingly dirty!

dog shark fishing IS disgustingly dirty. the amonia smell 505 refers to is actually urine coming through the skin. between the smell and hundreds of the tiny slimy things slithering all over the deck, it IS pretty nasty. i'd rather work the "honey" trucks cleaning grease traps and septic tanks.

Yes, I noticed. I figured it would based on the tone of the posts that occurred. That's why I started this one so I could find out what dog sharks are.

My husband is a commercial fisherman and has been for 25 plus years. Out of all the things he has fished for he has never smelled worse that after unloading a boat full of dog sharks. Just like 57518 says...they smell so bad because of the urine that comes through their skin.
