Subject: "High School Week"
Ok, Im 39 years old. Never in my life have I heard of anything like this "hsw" everyone keeps referring to here. Spring break for college, sure. High school? Never.
What kind of parents allow this? And if its an annual event, why doesnt local law enforcement put a stop to it? I hate to sound like a prude, I was young once too, but its illegal, and unsafe. Not to mention,it doesnt present a wholesome image for the OBX as a family getaway, if they tolerate this behavior every year. This isnt Miami, or Panama City. Whats the deal?

We had "beach week" in high school. What's so wrong with that? As long as no rules (renting houses) or laws (illegal drinking) are being broken. You can't just ban an entire age group from an area.

I wondered about it too. Ive read nothing but negative posts about drunk kids and parents renting houses for them.

I've only read one guy in particular's post about it on this board. I took it to be a repetitive joke. Has anyone else observed this "High School Week" phenomenon there?

It is a fact whether it be a local custom or what. It is nothing like the old college weeks in Ft Lauderdale and Cancun. Lived here for ten years and never saw really too much going on. Our house was also in a rental program for ten years from 1991 to 2001. We had one incident of our house occupied by a very large group of High School age people. Luckily we had good neighbors and a son who lived nearby. They called the Police who basically said they could do nothing unless something illegal was done. They said the rental contracts, although violated, would have to be settled in court they could not evict the kids without a court order. However one of our neighbors observed a keg on the deck and cops were back and simply through threat of arresting the under age drinkers they vacated the house after only two days. Our rental company told us to block out the High School week(s)

this is pretty much a non issue at OBX. a couple houses with kids, girls in one and boys in another with a couple parents present who are usually worse than the kids. Not like OC MD whatsoever. Mid June is the timeframe.

if it's a beach, you will have high school kids. there will always be some parent who believes in being "cool" in their kids' eyes and rents them a place. best bet is to avoid and/or report to police. it happens at all the beach "hot spots".

I work at a rental company and there certainly is high school week. Most are never noticed because they behave, but there are others that do not. Drinking is the main problem, over crowding a house is another and stuff gets broken and abused. I have seen a rental house near my personal one where an adult (parent maybe) would bring home those huge 24 packs of beer each evening for the kids. One house that sleeps 10 had 12 couples in it and they would smoke from a hookah on the porch at night, I am sure there was tobacco in it - yea.

Rental companies don't know it is happening until we get a call, drive by and see 9 cars, or the police tell us the next day. Our company kicked 2 groups out last June.

Yes, I agree that high school week is a legitimate thing. Kids sleep in cars in community parking lots, try to swim in pools of unrented homes, smoke pot, and drink. Yea 433 I was once a teenager, but I knew what the laws were. I also agree that the parents that "try" to be cool are the worst offenders by renting and buying for their little darlings. Maybe these kids should try to get a date lawfully.

Yep, I was also a teen once. I did my share of partying..but wasnt stupid enough to flaunt it. But then again, where I live, it isnt acceptable behavior.

I was a teen once too, but I followed the laws, rules and such and never had any problems. Both parents and the kids need to spend some time in Jail when the offenses begin and then maybe some of the foolishness will stop.

2007 myself and another parent brought 11 seniors/grads for a week in the OBX -- we are from Maryland and they never liked Ocean City and always as children, came to the OBX. No problems with them, they were not drinkers and it was a great week with them. Was great for me too -- 1 week in June and another week in Aug! We rented a huge house and the two adults were off from the group, so it was fine. And, they have become OBX'ers and still come down in the spring/summer when college is out. It depends on the kids and their upbringing on what they do and don't do. They were so good compared to my high school friends!
