Should we refrain from posting about restaurants we don't like to protect the feelings of the owners or their family? Should we refrain from posting about poor renters actions to prevent hurting their feelings or their family? Should we refrain from posting about stupid politicians and their stupid rules and tax increases for fear of insulting the morons? And should we not insult you for making this stupid post to begin with?

Let's just say to use some common sense and avoid as much useless negative posting as possible, but to say not to post something that can benefit others to the dangers of acting without thinking might actually help others in the future.

I really don't see the harm in posting about anything that happens on the OBX. As long as it is done with some bit of tact, which for some I know is impossible, but for the rest of us it shouldn't be a problem.

Were it not for the posts about people getting hit all the time crossing the highway, I never would have realized the danger myself. I always assumed I could "make it" no problem.

i agree, i think it would do more harm than good to sweep a topic like drowning under the rug. last i looked at that post, it was mostly responsible, why not just delete the posts that are deemed offensive?

Last time I checked, there was freedom of speech in this country. There are some negative people on this board, but everyone has been respectful of the deaths that have occurred recently.

I agree 973, however it is bad for the OBX as a whole...think about our local economoy here. Talking about it annonymously will not change it

I think talking about the drownings is not bad for the Outer Banks. I live in NJ and people die at the shore every summer. Sadly, many are children who cannot handle themselves in the waves/water.

I also live in close proximity to Philadelphia, where people drown in the Delaware River every summer. Sadly, they are also children/teens who do not swim on a regular basis and are not able to negotiate the strong currents.

I never view the press as negative for either location, nor the Banks. I believe it serves as a reminder to us all that we need a healthy respect for water...whether it's a pool, river, lake or ocean.

I would think that the family of a drowning victim would embrace the idea of educating the public of such, so another family does not have to go through the pain and heartache that they have to endure.I know I would.

Amazing. Cannot believe that in 2009, speech is being censored. Lets all put our rose colored glasses on..looks like we'll need them to read this board!!

Had to be a moderator. The original "drowning" thread is gone.

But there has been a thread for all of the other drownings, with nothing said, and not being pulled. So, maybe this was a family member?

Yes in 2009 speech is censored. You can look as high as the President who is trying to 'downplay' fox news as a non news network.

To the indiviual that started the discussion, lets talk about the drownings more, and how about lets start talking about how to prevent them. Sadly the last one being a accident, but how about the drownings that may have been preventable this past summer, and the last... oh lets say the last ten summers? I agree that it might do something to our economy here, but not as much as not doing anything about more lifeguarded beaches, and better beach education programs south of the bridge. We've done that one for a while now and we've lost around 20 families over the last four or five summers. How about the money we've lost there?

Hey 992 I don't think 972 is Mr. Adjective. This guy undoubtedly used a dictionary to write his post. Mr. Adjective owns the real vocabulary.

If my family member drowned in OBX , I wouldnt have any interest in OBX anymore, therefore I wouldnt be visiting this message board, so I cant imagine any one who lost a loved one would be here to get their feeling hurt.

I feel terrible for anyone who loses a family member, in any way. But to not discuss something like drowning, on a board about the beach..is just not plausible. Silence doesnt erase it..

I think people should be aware that
there are drownings here every yr.
Some people who come to the Outer Banks are not informed on just how rough and dangerous our surf can get down here. It may save lives if they knew these things. To say
to a message board don't discuss drownings is censorship and unless
someone posts an offensive post then it should be ok.

local person

hot topic. whoever started this post didn't really think it through. asking people not to write about drownings simply made people start writing about drownings again. season is over, many a trajedy has occured, educate b4 it's too late. don't just dismiss the topic.
